Former Federal Reserve Chair Ben Bernanke for their research on banking and financial crises. 

All three of them have authored significant studies that have revolutionised financial and monetary economics.

Bernanke is the most well-known of the winners. Although he worked on a wide range of macroeconomic subjects.

The Great Depression is particularly mentioned in the Nobel news release.
